Bowling Club Trophies

The Bowling trophies in the Vale Bowling Club have historically been donated by members, patrons and sponsors. I have provided a brief history of the trophies that are currently in use where the information was available.

I would very much appreciate the assistance of any members or guests who can provide more information on the trophies that have been omitted.

John Boyd Trophy
Presented to the club by the widow of ex-president John L. Boyd in 2000 and awarded to the winner of the championship.

Smollet Cup
This is the club's oldest trophy, presented in 1891 by Patrick Boyd Smollet of Bonhill, who succeeded to the Smollet estates on the death of his brother Alexander in 1881. He also succeeded his brother as Hon. President of the club. It is currently awarded to the winner of the President's prize.

Burnbrae Cup Presented in 1931 by Honorary Patron, James Russell of "Auburn" Alexandria. Replaced the Smollet Cup as the championship trophy during the period 1931 -1970. Now rests in the club's trophy display cabinet

Graham Stirling Cup Presented in 1971 by Hon. President T. Boyd Stirling L.L.B. and Hon. V.P. William Graham. It replaced the Burnbrae cup awarded to the club champion until itself being replaced by the John Boyd Cup.

Brock Cup The original trophy was presented in 1908 by Henry Brock of Auchenheglish, for single handed competition before being retained, as agreed, by D. Paton who in 1913 won it for the third time. Mr. Brock kindly presented another cup, this time not to be retained!

Lomond Cup Presented in 1932 by Hon. Patron James Russell to be played for in an annual match between Renton Bowling Club and the Vale.

Kinnear Rose Bowl Presented in 1934 by John Kinnear, a manager in the United Turkey Red works in Alexandria, and later an Hon.V.P. of the club. Now awarded to the runner up in the Brock Cup Competition.

Brock Shield Presented in 1936 by Mrs. Walter Brock of "Leabank". Entry for the Brock Shield competition is for those who have not won a four bowl single handed tournament. (Because of our large membership there are quite a few of these.) The "shield" was a wooden trophy with silver mounts. A small shield was added each year with the winner's name. When there was no more space the whole shield was mounted on larger wooden back but his too filled up and recently the shield has been replaced by the Sid Pack cup. The name of the tournament has been retained.

Sid Pack Cup Presented to the Club by the family of the late S.E. Pack, a respected bowling member and later honorary member of the club. (See above)

Bisland Cup Presented 1958 by Thomas M. Craig. Originally for afternoon competition by the senior members. Since 1979 it has been awarded to the winner of the Senior championship.

A. Nelson Memorial Cup Presented to the club by the widow of member Archie Nelson and awarded to the runner up in the championship.

Glen Cup Presented to the club in 1972 by John Glen, Hon. V.P. and currently awarded to the winners of the classified pairs.

Tatlow Cup Presented in 1975 by The widow of Arthur Tatlow, a long standing member of the club, and awarded to the winners of the club fours tournament.

John H. Glen Cup Presented to the club by John Glen, Hon. V.P. and currently awarded to the winners of the club's Nominated Triples.

McLaren Trophy Presented to the club in 1976 by "Ginger", widow of Alex McLaren and awarded to the winner of the two bowl singles.

Mushet Plate Presented by the club in 1979 in memory of the first champion. Awarded to the winners of the balloted, mixed fours.

McPherson Cup Presented in 1975 by the widow of Alan MacPherson and awarded each year to the winner of the Junior (U25) championship.

Morrison & Ritchie Cup Presented to the club in 1986 by local butchers, Eddie Ritchie and Jimm,y Morrison who were members of the club. Awarded to the winner of the Junior (U18) Championship.

Eileen Patterson Trophy Presented to the club in 1991 by member William Patterson in memory of his late wife. Awarded to the winners of the mixed pairs.

H. Campbell Cup Awarded to the club in 1991 by the widow of member Hamilton (Hammy) Campbell. Awarded to the winners of the mixed fours.

Fairview Cup Presented to the club by John Glen and named after his house. This is awarded to the winners of the nominated pairs.
and finally ...
The Wooden Spoon Presented in 1946 by J.C. Ross, a former secretary of the club. The "winner" is the person who who finishes at the wrong end of the weekly rinks table. Traditionally he also receives a dram from the top table at the annual supper and presentation of prizes. Tradition also has it that he must accept and "sink" the dram in one go!
