A Day Celebrating John Wood's 50th Anniversary as a Member

14 June 2009

Special Day

On Sunday 14th June a special match was organised to celebrate John Wood's 50th anniversary. John invited 48 people from the Vale of Leven and other clubs with associations to the Vale. Also invited were the "non playing captains", Jimmy Roger and Jake Lewis.

John met his guests in the assembly hall and provided free drinks before the match started. Twelve rinks had been picked and after drawing rinks a game of 15 ends was played in glorious, warm sunshine. The weather was remarkable considering that there was torrential rain and and flooding three or four miles away in Dumbarton - clearly a case of the "sun shining on the righteous!"

After the game the guests sat down to an excellent meal provided by Venue Caterers. The winners were then announced and prizes distributed by John ably assisted by President Brian Wilson. One of our local bards, David McDonald then offered an entertaining tribute to John.

John had commissioned a unique badge for the event. This was designed by Jim Tennant. All those attending were presented with the badge,

Fiftieth anniversaries are not common in bowling clubs and worthy of celebrating. this was a particulalry enjoyable day and we look forward to others that are coming up in the next two or three years. We can then look forward to John's 60th.
