Opening Day 2005

bowling club opening day 2005
The Official Party

The 2005 season was formally launched at the Vale of Leven Bowling Club on Saturday 9 April. The greens looked in good condition despite the heavy rain we have been having but the disappointing weather on the day did not prevent a very large turnout from watching as Mary McDonald, President Ian McDonald's wife opened the greens by throwing the customary silver jack. She then delivered the first two bowls (and very well delivered too) before officially announcing that the greens were opened.

The Club President welcomes his Guests

After the traditional speeches the 11 new members for the 2005 season were each introduced to the club in turn and presented with their membership cards by the President. The thumbnail images of this part of the proceedings can be enlarged by clicking on them. Note that these are large images and may take a few seconds to download.

Our two charming flower girls then presented the ladies on the official party with bouquets of flowers. For performing this duty so well they each received a gift from the club. Once again the thumbnail images below can be enlarged by clicking on them.

When the formal opening and presentations were complete the gents played seven ends of bowls. This was not taken too seriously, which was evident in the queue at the bar during the game. When the bowls were complete the socialising continued into the evening. A selection of images of some "weel kent" faces are below.

And not forgetting the Grand National!

Are you Curious?

As a footnote, and nothing to do with the opening day, I came across this image that I found during a recent holiday on the Algarve. Click the image to see a larger version of what the Portuguese think bowling is about. (Read the English translation.)
