Opening Day 2006

The 2006 season was formally launched at the Vale
of Leven Bowling Club on Saturday 8 April. The greens looked in reasonable condition
despite the recent cold spell we have been having. The weather had been so bad
during the previous 24 hours that it had been decided in the morning that no
play would take place. A remarkable turnaround in the weather conditions in the
two or three hours before the opening forced a rethink. The sun came out and
the wind had dried the greens sufficiently to allow the greens to be opened as
normal.

The party on the green included Vice President Jack Bruce & Partner
Moira Rodger, Hon. President John Nicolson & Wife Betty, Lady President Heather
Mullen, Lady Vice President Rosemary Armstrong, Club President George McGaffin,
Immediate Past President Ian MacDonald & Wife Mary, S.B.A. Rep. Ernest Johnson,
D.B.A. Rep. John Gillies, Hon. Vice President John Wood, Hon. Vice President
James Rodger & Wife
Janette and Secretary Eric McCallum & Wife Christine.

The first bowl of 2006 is delivered!
President
George McGaffin's daughter, Gillian, then graciously threw the silver jack to
signify the opening of the greens. Bouquets of flowers were then presented to
the ladies in the official party by Callum McGaffin, the presidents's grandson
and Samantha Grace. The club then presented gifts to the children for their assistance.
When the formal opening and presentations were
complete the gents played seven ends of bowls. This was not taken too seriously,
which was evident in the queue at the bar during the game. The winning rink was
14 up, (the Howler, [Helensburgh guest], Alex Keiller, John McKenzie [Buchanan
Arms guest] and Bryan Weir, skip. They were presented with DVD players as
prizes for their efforts.
