Opening Day 2008

official party (click to enlarge)
Another
highly enjoyable opening day took place at the Vale of Leven Bowling
Club on Saturday 12th April 2008. The weather forecast had not
been encouraging but in the hours leading up to the opening
ceremony the rain did not arrive. Unfortunately for the party on
the green it started just before the ceremony and unlike
last year it was also very cold.
Past President Jack Bruce thanked the
members for their support last year then passed the microphone
over to our incoming President, David Nicolson. David mentioned
that the event was tinged with sadness for him due to the passing
of his father and our honorary president, John, in January of this
year. I am sure that John would have been very proud to see David
as the club president, a position that he too had once held.

The greens were then officially opened
by President David's partner, Karen Brodie, who made a great
job of delivering the first two bowls of the season.
The
ladies in the official party were then presented with flowers
by our two charming flower girls.
They were then themselves presented with gifts
for carrying out their duties so well (and for braving the
weather).

New Members
This year eight new members were welcomed
to the club by President David. Each of them was presented
with their membership on the green and introduced to the existing
members who were present.

After the formal proceedings the stage
was set for the 2008 opening game. At this point
the weather took a turn for the better. The sun came out and both
greens were full to capacity as members and guests enjoyed the
play on greens, which played very well for the first day of the
season. Seven ends were played but even in such a short game the
players managed to arrange several refreshment breaks.

John Cameron,
Bryan Weir, Jim McPhee and Pat McColl
The highest up rink on the day was
skipped by Bryan Weir with new member Jimmy McPhee lead, Pat MColl
second and John (in the bar) Cameron third. The winning rink was
presented with prizes for their efforts.
Aftre the game an excellent buffet,
provided by Robert Mills caterers, was layed on for members and
guests who stayed on to enjoy what was a very enjoyable opening
day.
