2005 World Indoor Bowling Championship
Paul Foster, the 31 year from Troon, was yesterday
(16/01/05) crowned the new World Indoor Bowling Champion for 2005
when he beat John Price of Wales in a highly entertaining final
that was arguably one of the best ever.
The brilliant Foster, who had been suffering from a painfull sore
throat, just edged Price in a very sporting encounter. With three ends to play of the first set Foster
was losing 4-10, and with Price playing brilliantly, it seemed
highly unlikely that he would take anything from the set. However
he stepped up a gear and finished the last three ends scoring 3,
2, 1 to half the set at 10-10.
In the second set Price again started really well
placing his opponent under pressure as he led 4-1 and 5-3 before
Foster again dug in and went into a 7-6 lead. In an incredible
penultimate end, with Foster lying the shot, John Price played
a running shot and ditched the jack. In accordance with the television
rules the jack was spotted towards the right hand rear side of
the rink leaving Foster lying one shot a few feet away. With the
Jack well off centre Foster then proceeded to draw within six inches
to lie two shots making Price's task at the next end very difficult
indeed. With the last bowl to play John Price was in an extremely
difficult position. Another running shot was out of the question
since he had no position at the back. His only option was to try
to draw the shot. Incredibly he managed to do just that with a
delivery that was, under the circumstances one of the best ever.
This "peeled" the game going into the last end.
They shot changed a couple of times at the last bur Foster played
brilliantly again to hold on for his victory. He now becomes the
fifth player and the third Scot to win the work indoor bowling
championship three times, sharing the honor with David Bryant,
Richard Corsie, Tony Allcock and Alex Marshall.
