The Bowling Club News and Comment Page

Forthcoming
Social Events
Note: I am unable to cover all events that take place in the club. This is why reporting in here is a bit hit or miss. I would be happy to upload reports and
images from other members who are willing to help with this. Please feel free to send me your contributions.
I also intend to use this page as a kind of blog, where comments about bowling in general can be posted. If you have anything (decent ;o) that you would like to say feel free to email it to me.
Regards,
Bryan.
19 April 2010 - Blazing the trail - without blazers?
Most of us are aware that most local clubs have not been doing too well lately. Falling membership, lack of interest and a reduction in the money being spent over the bar is causing lots of problems throughout the bowling world. In my opinion bowling authorities (locally and nationally) are much too conservative.
They have failed to recognise that the image we project is just not attractive to younger people. In our blazers and flannels we are becoming objects of derision to some of them. I myself have been advocating change for the last few years but strangely there has always been a resistance to this.
When I joined the Vale BC back in 1969 it was at a time when the trendy dress of the day consisted of made to measure suits, sports jackets, blazers and flannels. Indeed right at the time I joined there was a fashion for wearing "crested ties". Bowling club uniforms were actually quite cool and I could quite easily play a match on Saturday and then go off to a disco in the evening wearing the same "cool" gear. (Yes we did have discos back then!) My outfit was all the more credible because I was actually a bona fide member of a club and fully entitled to wear the blazer and tie.
These days are long gone. No one is denying that the uniform still looks smart but "smart" no longer equates to "cool". This changed many years ago. Our bowling uniforms are the same as they were 50 or 60 years ago. With our ties and blazers we are dressing in the style of a bygone era. Many people do not even wear ties to weddings nowadays. Change is long overdue. Fortunately the penny seems to finally be dropping. Here's a link to an article in the Herald today.

To help commemorate this special year our own Jim Tennant was asked to design a new badge.
As you can see Jim has once again managed to produce a very attractive badge.
